Events Description

Every year on Shrove Tuesday

Commencing at 2pm on Shrove Tuesday every year, the Duke of Northumberland starts the ‘game’ by throwing the football from the battlements of the Alnwick Castle barbican to the waiting crowd below. The game continues downhill to the pastures and is played on the pastures and the river Aln below the castle.
Spectators are welcome – but don’t get too close!
